A guest judges a hotel twice before reaching the room: once at the front desk and once in the lift. If you are planning a hotel lift in Patna, whether for a new property or to replace a tired old car, the useful question is not "which lift?" but "how many kinds of movement does my building have?". Guests, luggage, linen, food and staff all travel between floors, and they should not all share one car. Eldeal Engineers plans, supplies and installs hotel lifts from our Patna branch on Exhibition Road, beside the petrol pump and looks after them afterwards.
This page is for hotel owners, general managers and their architects. It covers which lifts a hotel needs, how to size them for luggage and trolleys, and what happens when a lift stops at night.
Why hotels in the state capital work their lifts hard
Patna is the capital of Bihar, so its hotels fill for many reasons besides tourism: government work, court dates, competitive exams, medical visits, business travel and weddings. Check-outs bunch up in the morning. Exam weekends bring full houses of short stays. In the wedding season one party can take most of the rooms and the banquet floor on the same night.
The buildings add to the load. Many city hotels and guest houses stand on tight plots and grow upwards, so the rooms sit several floors above a narrow frontage and the lift is the only comfortable way up. Hot summers, monsoon water at ground level and power cuts make it one of the hardest-working machines in the property.
Front of house, back of house, kitchen: split the traffic first
Most complaints about hotel lifts come from asking one car to do everything. Separate the jobs first.
| Lift | What it carries | Typical starting point (indicative) | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest lift | Guests, hand luggage, visitors | 8–13 persons (544–884 kg), 1.0–1.5 m/s | Lobby, in sight of the front desk |
| Service lift | Housekeeping trolleys, linen, luggage carts, room service, staff | 10–15 persons (680–1020 kg) with a deeper car and hard-wearing finish | Back-of-house corridor |
| Kitchen dumbwaiter | Food trays, crockery, room-service orders | 50–100 kg, counter-height loading | Kitchen to restaurant, banquet or rooftop |
| Capsule lift (optional) | Guests, as a lobby or facade feature | 6–10 persons (408–680 kg) | Atrium, lobby or front elevation |
A small guest house can run on one passenger elevator, provided it is sized honestly for bags as well as people. Once the restaurant is on a different floor from the kitchen, a dumbwaiter elevator takes tray traffic off the stairs and out of the guest car. Larger hotels with banquet floors need a true service lift, so that linen cages and catering never meet guests in the lobby.
What a hotel lift in Patna must carry: bags, carts and linen cages
Rated capacity is counted in persons, but hotels move people with things. We size around what actually enters the car.
- Count bags, not only heads. A family arriving for a wedding brings several large suitcases. A car rated for eight people seldom holds eight people and their luggage, so one size up is usually money well spent.
- Measure your trolleys. Give us the length and width of the luggage cart, housekeeping trolley, room-service trolley and linen cage. Car depth and clear door width decide whether they roll in straight or have to be wrestled in at an angle.
- Choose the door for the shaft. Centre-opening automatic doors give the quickest, widest entry. Side-opening doors make the most of a narrow shaft on a tight city plot.
- Protect the service car. Bump rails, kick plates and a tough floor keep trolley damage away from the walls and doors.
Our guide on how to choose a passenger lift explains the capacity and speed reasoning in more detail.
Ride noise, bedroom walls and cabin finish
Every Eldeal lift uses a V3F drive, which starts softly and stops level with the floor. Level stops matter in a hotel: trolley wheels do not catch on a step, and elderly guests do not trip at the door. Noise is the other half of ride quality. At design stage we check which rooms share a wall with the shaft and where the machine will sit, because a quiet machine can still disturb a guest if it is placed beside a bed head.
For the cabin, owners usually choose between hairline or mirror-finish stainless steel, wood-look panels, a stone-look floor, a handrail and a mirror on the rear wall. Good LED lighting and a cabin fan make a real difference in a Patna summer. Pick finishes your housekeeping team can keep spotless.
A capsule lift as a lobby feature
A glass lift in the lobby or on the front elevation gives guests something to photograph and gives the building an identity from the road. It works best beside a standard guest lift and not instead of one, because the feature lift alone rarely handles check-out peaks. On a sun-facing facade a glass car heats up in summer, so glass tint, ventilation and orientation are settled on drawings. See our capsule elevators for shapes and sizes, and our article on capsule lifts for hotels and malls for planning advice.
After midnight: breakdown cover for a property that never closes
A hotel never closes, so breakdown cover has to work at the hours when an office building is empty.
- Power cuts: the Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) brings the car to the nearest floor and opens the doors. Your generator then takes over; the ARD covers the gap before it does.
- A guest inside: the intercom and alarm reach your front desk, which is staffed all night, and the emergency light stays on.
- Your duty staff: at handover we brief them on how to reassure a guest, whom to call and what never to do, such as forcing the doors.
- Our side: Eldeal runs a 24/7 support line, with technicians working from the Patna branch. We do not print a response time on a web page. The commitment we can make for your property is written into your lift AMC, and preventive visits are booked for your low-occupancy hours.
- Monsoon: where the ground floor is prone to waterlogging, a properly waterproofed pit protects the equipment at the bottom of the shaft.
Standards and Bihar rules a hotel owner should know
For the lift itself, the governing standard is IS 17900, mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025 as per BIS. It stresses protection against unintended car movement (UCMP), ascending car overspeed (ACOP) and rescue during power failure. The Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, passed by the Assembly on 2 August 2024, provides for registration, inspections, mandatory maintenance and third-party insurance. Taller hotels may also need a fire lift under the National Building Code 2016, which your architect and fire approval will confirm. Please check the current notifications with the local authority.
Cost, renovation and how the work runs
The price of a hotel lift depends on the number of floors, capacity, the number of lifts, door type, cabin finish, any glass work and the civil work your building needs. We do not put a price on a hotel lift without seeing the building. After a free site survey you receive drawings and an itemised written quote, followed by supply, installation with an inspection at each stage, testing and a briefing for your staff.
If the hotel is already running, we plan the work around your bookings and away from the wedding season, and keep one lift in service wherever there are two. Samridhi Hotel & Resorts in Sasaram and Kashi Residency Hotel in Varanasi are among our hospitality clients.
