Retail rent in a city centre is paid on every floor, but customers spend most of their time on the ground floor unless something carries them up. That is the business case for a lift for a showroom in Patna: it turns the first, second and third floors into selling space instead of storage. Eldeal Engineers plans and installs customer lifts, stock lifts, glass lifts and escalators for showrooms and shopping complexes from our Patna branch on Exhibition Road.
This page is for showroom owners, retail chains fitting out rented floors and developers of shopping complexes. It deals with five practical choices: customer lift or stock lift, glass or steel, escalator or lift, how to cope with festival crowds, and how to fit a lift into a narrow shop plot.
Who shops in Patna, and why that affects the lift
Patna draws shoppers from across Bihar, and much of the buying is done by families, not individuals. A wedding purchase of sarees, suits or jewellery brings grandparents, parents and children together, and they stay for hours. If the bridal section is on the second floor and the eldest member of the family cannot climb, the whole group stays downstairs. A lift that is easy to see and comfortable to use keeps that family, and its budget, moving through the building.
Customer lift, stock lift or both?
Different trades move different things. The table gives indicative starting points only.
| Showroom | For customers | For stock |
|---|---|---|
| Sarees, garments, footwear | Passenger lift, 8–13 persons, wide doors for family groups | Dumbwaiter for cartons; a small goods lift if cloth arrives in bales |
| Jewellery | Compact, well-finished passenger lift in view of staff | Usually none; stock is small |
| Electronics and home appliances | Passenger lift, 10–13 persons | Goods lift sized for fridges and washing machines on a trolley |
| Furniture | Passenger lift with a deep car | Large-platform goods lift with a full-width door |
| Two-wheelers and cars | Passenger lift | Goods lift for two-wheelers; car elevator for four-wheelers |
| Shopping complex with many shops | Two or more passenger lifts, escalators on the lower floors | Shared service lift at the rear |
Keeping stock out of the customer car protects the cabin finish and keeps the lift free during selling hours. Depending on the load, the answer is a dumbwaiter elevator for cartons, a freight elevator for bulky goods, or a car elevator where vehicles are displayed upstairs.
Moving steps or a lift car: the choice for low-rise retail
Owners of mid-size showrooms often ask whether an escalator would look more impressive. It does, but it suits fewer buildings than people expect.
| Point | Escalator | Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Large floors with steady, heavy footfall | Any size of shop, including narrow plots |
| Floor space | A long opening on every floor, plus landing space at both ends | One compact shaft |
| Who can use it | Most shoppers; not wheelchairs, prams or trolleys | Everyone, including elderly customers |
| Effect on sales floors | Shoppers see each floor as they rise | Needs signs and displays to tell shoppers what is upstairs |
In practice a shopping complex with wide floors benefits from escalators between the ground and first or second floor, with lifts for access to everything above. A single showroom on a city plot is nearly always better served by a lift. Even where escalators are installed, a lift is still needed for customers who cannot use moving steps.
Using a glass lift to advertise your upper floors
A capsule lift does two jobs: it carries customers, and it advertises that there are more floors to see. Placed at the front of an atrium or on the facade, a lit glass car moving up the building is visible from the road in the evening, when the markets are busiest. Inside a jewellery or bridal showroom, a panoramic car with good lighting adds to the sense of occasion.
Glass needs planning. Laminated safety glass is standard, a sun-facing car needs tinting and ventilation for the summer, and you must be able to clean both sides. Our capsule elevators page shows the common shapes, from semi-circular to square panoramic cars.
Short frontage, deep plot: placing a lift for a showroom in Patna
Many shops on the city's established market roads have a short frontage and a long depth. Every foot of frontage is display window, so the lift must not sit there. These are the moves that usually work:
- Put the shaft at the rear or beside the stairs. Customers then walk the length of the floor, past the merchandise, to reach it.
- Choose a machine-room-less design. With no machine room above the shaft, the roof stays free for a water tank, a generator or one more floor later.
- Use side-opening doors. They give a wide entrance in a shaft too narrow for centre-opening doors.
- Consider a car with two entrances. Where the front and rear of the building are at different levels, a car that opens on both sides serves the half-floors without a second lift.
- Check the basement. If the basement is a sales or stock floor, the pit goes below it, and waterproofing matters in a city where monsoon water collects at road level.
Festival peaks: Dhanteras, Diwali and the wedding season
A showroom lift may run lightly for weeks and then carry the year's heaviest crowds in a few evenings. Plan for those evenings.
- Overload sensor with voice prompt: when too many people squeeze in, the lift stays put and says why, which saves your staff an argument at the door.
- Light curtain: a full-height curtain keeps doors from closing on shopping bags, sarees and children.
- Service before the season: schedule a full preventive visit ahead of the festive weeks under a lift AMC, and avoid any planned shutdown during them.
- ARD: if the power fails on a crowded evening, the car travels to the nearest floor and opens its doors.
- A staff member at the lift: on the busiest days, someone guiding customers in and out keeps the queue calm.
Rules, cost and the way we work
A showroom is open to the public, so compliance matters. New lifts have had to follow IS 17900 since 22 December 2025, as per BIS. Under the Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, a lift in a shop or mall is to be registered, inspected, kept under maintenance and covered by third-party insurance. Ask the local authority which notifications are in force before you open.
Cost depends on the number of floors, capacity, door type, cabin finish, any glass work and the civil work the building needs. Our Patna lift price guide explains these drivers. We survey the premises free of charge, give an itemised written quote, install with an inspection at each stage and time the work around your selling calendar.
