Why modernise instead of replace?

Safety, standards and the 20-year question
Lift safety rules in India are changing. According to BIS, IS 17900, the new lift safety standard harmonised with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50, became mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025. It places strong emphasis on UCMP, ACOP and ARD. The Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024 also refers to replacement or major upgrade of lifts after around 20 years.
