Hotel Lift in Varanasi: Quiet Nights, Real Luggage and the Right Mix of Lifts

Guest lifts, service lifts and kitchen dumbwaiters for hotels and guest houses in Varanasi, sized for luggage, quiet at night and backed by 24/7 support.

Hotel guests in Varanasi keep unusual hours. They check in after a late train, leave before sunrise for a boat ride on the Ganga, come back for breakfast and go out again for the evening aarti. A hotel lift in Varanasi therefore works hardest at exactly the times when the rest of the building is asleep, and it has to do that quietly, with bags, elders and tired children inside.

Eldeal Engineers supplies, installs and maintains lifts for hotels, guest houses, lodges and dharamshalas from two local branches: Ch8, Paramhans Ashram Road, Bhagwanpur, and 139/1 Samne Ghat Road, near Janaki Nagar More. Kashi Residency Hotel is one of our clients in the city. This page is written for owners and managers who are building, extending or renovating a property and want to get the lifts right the first time.

The 4.30 a.m. test: a quiet lift and a cabin that lasts

Noise is a room-quality issue. A guest sleeping beside the shaft should not know that someone left for the ghats at 4.30 in the morning. Three things decide this:

  • The drive. V3F control accelerates and slows the car gradually, which removes the thump and jerk of older two-speed lifts.
  • The doors. Most lift noise complaints are door complaints. Well-adjusted door operators and clean sills make the difference.
  • The layout. If you are still at drawing stage, try not to place a bed-head wall against the shaft. Where roof space is needed for a restaurant, a machine-room-less (MRL) lift keeps the terrace free.

For the cabin, hairline stainless steel hides fingerprints and scratches better than mirror finish. Add a handrail, a hard-wearing floor that matches the lobby, soft lighting and bumper rails at trolley height. In the humid monsoon months that Varanasi gets every year, stainless steel and good cabin ventilation matter more than decorative laminates.

One night manager, one stopped lift: the set-up that copes

The worst time for a lift problem is when only a night manager is on duty. A hotel lift should be set up so that one person can handle it calmly:

  • Automatic rescue device (ARD). In a power cut the car moves to the nearest floor and opens its doors. Connect the lift to your generator as well if you want it to keep running.
  • Intercom to a staffed point. The car intercom should ring at reception, not in an empty office.
  • Emergency light and alarm inside the car, plus an overload sensor with voice prompt that tells a large group to step out before the lift moves.
  • A written night routine. Who talks to the guest, who calls us, and what nobody should attempt.

Eldeal Engineers runs a 24/7 support line. With a lift AMC, we schedule a thorough service before your busiest weeks, so that worn door parts and weak ARD batteries are found in daylight, not by a guest.

Three jobs, three lifts: guest, service and kitchen

In a hotel, the lift is doing three different jobs. How many machines you need for them depends on the size of the property.

The guest lift

This is the lift people remember. It needs a smooth start and stop, accurate levelling at each floor, automatic doors and a finish that still looks good after thousands of suitcases. Our passenger elevators use V3F drives and are typically offered from 4 to 20 persons. For most hotels the useful range is 6 to 13 persons.

The service lift

Housekeeping carts, linen bags, mini-bar stock, mattresses and the plumber's ladder should not travel with guests. A service lift is a plainer passenger lift, often with a tougher floor and wall protection, placed near the back-of-house corridor. It also gives you a spare when the guest lift is under maintenance.

The kitchen dumbwaiter

If your kitchen is on one level and the restaurant, banquet floor or terrace dining is on another, a dumbwaiter moves plates, trays and crockery between them. It carries goods only, never people, and keeps cooking smells and staff traffic out of the guest lift.

Mid-size hotel with a restaurantOne guest lift and one service liftDumbwaiter from kitchen to dining floor
Larger hotel with banquet floorsTwo or more guest lifts and a separate service liftCapsule lift in the lobby, goods-only kitchen lift

These are starting points, not rules. The right answer comes from your room count, floors and layout, which we study during the survey.

Luggage, trolleys and wheelchairs: size the car from real objects

A capacity plate in persons does not tell you whether a luggage trolley fits. Before you approve any drawing, measure the things that will actually go into the car:

  • Your luggage trolley, including the handle, plus the bellboy standing beside it.
  • The housekeeping cart, if it will share the guest lift.
  • A wheelchair with an attendant. Many pilgrim families travel with an elderly parent, and the wheelchair should roll in without a three-point turn.
  • The largest item you replace regularly, such as a mattress or a small refrigerator.

A deeper car usually helps more than a wider one, and a wider door opening makes loading faster than a bigger cabin behind a narrow door. Where the shaft is fixed and small, telescopic doors give a wider clear opening than centre-opening doors in the same space.

When a capsule lift earns its place in the lobby

A glass capsule elevator turns the lift into part of the welcome. It works when there is something to look at and somewhere to be seen from: an atrium, an open stairwell or an outside wall of the building. It carries the same safety features as a standard lift. It does cost more, needs laminated safety glass and regular cleaning, and should not be chosen at the expense of a service lift. Our article on capsule elevators for hotels and malls covers the design choices.

Planning a hotel lift in Varanasi: site, rules and cost

Many hotels and guest houses in Varanasi stand on narrow, deep plots, and some are in lanes where a truck cannot reach the gate. We check the delivery route during the survey and bring rails, machine and car panels in manageable pieces. If the hotel is open, working hours and barricading are agreed with you first.

On the rules: the Uttar Pradesh Lifts and Escalators Act, 2024 requires lifts and escalators to be registered and regularly maintained. New lifts fall under IS 17900, the lift safety standard that BIS made mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025. Taller buildings also have National Building Code requirements such as fire lifts. Please confirm the current notifications with the local authority and your architect.

We do not quote a flat price for a hotel lift. The cost depends on the number of lifts, capacity, stops, MRL or machine room, door type, cabin finish and whether glass is involved. Civil work for the shaft and pit is separate and is done by your contractor to our drawing. You get an itemised written quote, so you can compare, for example, one large lift against a guest lift plus a small service lift. More about our team is on the Varanasi location page.

Our guest house stands in a lane that a truck cannot enter. Can a lift still be delivered and installed?

Usually yes. We check the delivery route during the survey and bring the rails, machine and car panels in pieces that can be carried in. On a tight plot, a machine-room-less design and telescopic doors help us fit a usable car into a small shaft. Most small guest houses are served well by one passenger lift in the 6 to 8 person range, deep enough for two guests and their bags.

Our hotel is an older building and guests complain about lift noise. What is usually behind it?

In older hotels the noise is usually the door, the machine or a rattling fixture, not the car itself. We look at where the machine and controller sit, adjust the doors properly and advise on the wall between the shaft and the nearest room. A V3F drive takes away the jerk and relay clatter of an older control system, and regular servicing keeps the lift quiet.

Can a dumbwaiter carry food from a ground-floor kitchen to a rooftop restaurant?

Yes, that is one of the most common uses. A dumbwaiter is a small goods-only lift, typically rated between 25 and 250 kg, that opens at counter height in the kitchen and in the service pantry upstairs. It needs its own small shaft, so plan the route before the kitchen is tiled and fitted.

We have a narrow lobby with no atrium. Is a glass lift still worth considering?

Only if there is a place where the glass will actually show, such as an open stairwell or an outside wall. A capsule lift costs more than a standard car of the same capacity and its glass needs regular cleaning. Hidden in an enclosed shaft behind a wall, it adds cost without adding a view, and a well-finished standard lift gives better value.

Who do our night staff call if the lift stops at 2 a.m.?

Our support line is open 24 hours a day on +91 84489 44342. The night manager should first speak to the guest through the intercom and keep them calm. Staff must not force the landing doors or try to lift anyone out between floors. If the stoppage is caused by a power cut, the ARD brings the car to a floor and opens the doors.

Can we keep one lift running while the second one is being installed or serviced?

Yes. Where a hotel has two lifts, we work on one at a time so guests always have a lift. If you are adding a second lift to an existing hotel, the new shaft is barricaded and the existing lift stays in use, with noisy work kept to hours you agree with us.
