A capsule elevator is a lift with glass walls, often in a rounded or angled shape, that lets passengers see out as they ride. For hotels and malls, a capsule elevator turns an everyday necessity into a feature that guests remember. It brings light into the atrium, draws people to upper floors and makes the building look modern. The key decisions are glass type, shape, placement, heat control and maintenance.

Why hotels and malls choose a capsule elevator
- First impression: a glass lift in the lobby or atrium signals a premium property.
- Footfall to upper floors: in malls, visible movement and a view encourage shoppers to go up.
- Light and openness: glass does not block sightlines the way a solid shaft does.
- Experience: in a hotel, a ride with a view of a garden, river or city adds to the guest experience.

Capsule elevator design options
Shapes
- Round or semi-round: the classic capsule look. Curved glass costs more but looks striking.
- Diamond or angled (hexagonal / octagonal): made from flat glass panels at angles. A good balance of style and cost.
- Square or rectangular with glass front: the simplest and most economical, with one or more glass walls.
Glass types
Glass is the heart of a capsule lift. It must be strong, safe if it breaks, and clear.

Modern lift standards such as EN 81-20, with which India's IS 17900 is harmonised, require laminated glass for glass car walls. Glass near passenger height also needs handrails and must pass impact tests. Ask your supplier to state the glass make-up and confirm it meets IS 17900.
Finishes and lighting
The frame can be stainless steel (hairline or mirror), gold or rose-gold finish, or painted to match the building. LED lighting on the car roof and base makes the capsule glow at night. This is a big draw in hotel lobbies and mall atriums.
Capacity and speed
Capsule lifts are sized like any passenger lift. Capacity is rated at 68 kg per person in India, so an 8-person capsule carries 544 kg. Round cabins have less floor area than square ones for the same shaft width, so check that the cabin fits your expected crowd and, in hotels, guests with luggage. For malls, where shoppers arrive in groups, a larger car or two capsules side by side can prevent queues. Speed should suit the number of floors. A slow, steady ride lets guests enjoy the view, but the lift still needs to move people efficiently at peak times.
Placement: inside or outside the building
- Atrium or lobby (indoor): the most common choice. The lift runs in an open or glass shaft inside the building, protected from rain and dust.
- External wall (outdoor): the lift runs along the outside of the building with a view of the surroundings. This gives the best view but needs full weather protection.
- Beside a staircase or void: works well in malls where shoppers can see the lift from several levels.

Heat and sun in Bihar and Eastern UP
This point is often missed. A glass box in direct sun can get very hot, especially from April to June. Before you finalise placement, consider:
- Orientation: avoid long exposure to afternoon sun from the west where possible.
- Solar-control glass: tinted or coated laminated glass reduces heat and glare.
- Ventilation: a good cabin fan is a must. Some projects add air-conditioning for the car.
- Shaft ventilation: a glass shaft needs vents so heat does not build up.
- Shading: canopies, louvres or building overhangs help external lifts.
- Dust and monsoon: outdoor lifts need sealing against rain and a plan for regular cleaning.
Planning checklist for a capsule lift
- Decide the purpose: guest experience, shopper flow or both.
- Choose indoor atrium or external wall placement.
- Check sun direction and plan solar-control glass and ventilation.
- Pick the shape based on design goals and budget.
- Set capacity and speed based on expected traffic.
- Confirm structure, pit and headroom with a site survey.
- Agree glass specification, handrails and IS 17900 compliance in writing.
- Plan cleaning access and an AMC before installation.
Capsule elevator safety
A capsule lift has the same core safety systems as any passenger lift, plus glass-specific checks. Look for:
- ARD (automatic rescue device) to bring the car to the nearest floor in a power cut
- Overload sensor with voice prompt
- Door light curtain, intercom, alarm and emergency light
- Overspeed governor and safety gear
- Laminated glass with handrails at the correct height
- Compliance with IS 17900, which BIS made mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025

What drives capsule elevator cost
A capsule lift usually costs more than a standard passenger lift of the same capacity. We do not publish fixed prices because every project is different, but these are the main drivers:
- Shape: curved glass costs more than flat panels.
- Glass area and type: more glass and solar-control glass add cost.
- Capacity and speed: larger cars and faster drives cost more.
- Floors served: more stops mean more rails, glass and wiring.
- Glass shaft or open structure: a full glass shaft is a major cost item.
- Finishes and lighting: premium frames and LED effects add up.
- Indoor vs outdoor: weatherproofing adds cost.

Maintenance for capsule lifts
- Glass cleaning: inside daily in busy hotels and malls; outside as often as dust and weather require.
- Glass inspection: check for chips, cracks and loose fixings at every service.
- Seals and gaskets: especially for outdoor lifts, to keep water and dust out.
- Standard lift service: brakes, ropes, doors, drive, ARD and safety circuits every month.
- Lighting: replace failed LEDs quickly; a dark capsule looks neglected.
