Passenger lifts for apartments, hotels and hospitals usually cost more because they carry more people, travel higher and run many more trips a day. The honest answer is that there is no single price: the building decides the lift, and the lift decides the cost.

What Decides Lift Price in India?
Two lifts that look similar in a brochure can differ by several lakh rupees. The difference almost always comes from the factors below.

The ranges below are indicative only. They assume a standard installation and will change with floors, capacity and finish. Treat them as a starting point for budgeting, not a quotation.
Home lifts
For a bungalow or duplex with two to four stops, the market commonly quotes roughly ₹4.5 lakh to ₹18 lakh or more. The lower end usually means a compact car, fewer stops and simple finishes. Passenger lifts for apartments and offices
A passenger elevator for a G+4 or taller building costs more than a home lift because of higher capacity, more stops and heavier daily use. The final figure depends heavily on the number of floors, the capacity (for example 6, 8 or 13 persons) and whether you choose a machine room or MRL design.
Hospital, capsule and goods lifts
Hospital lifts need a deep car for a bed or stretcher, accurate levelling and reliable backup. Capsule lifts use glass and decorative structures. Goods and car lifts carry heavy loads and need strong structures. All three usually sit above standard passenger lifts in price, and each should be quoted only after a site visit.
Hidden Costs That Most Lift Quotes Leave Out
Many buyers compare only the equipment price and are surprised later. Ask whether each of the following is included, and if not, budget for it separately.
Civil work
- Lift shaft (hoistway): an RCC or brick shaft built by your contractor, or a steel structure supplied with the lift.
- Pit: the space below the lowest floor. Its depth depends on the lift type and must be waterproofed.
- Headroom: clear height above the top floor for the car and equipment.
- Machine room: needed only for conventional traction lifts. MRL and many home lifts do not need one.
- Openings, lintels and finishing around each landing door.
Electrical supply and power backup
- A dedicated power supply of the right rating, with proper earthing, run to the lift controller.
- An Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) that moves the car to the nearest floor and opens the doors during a power cut. In Bihar and Eastern UP, where power cuts still happen, we treat ARD as essential.
- If you want the lift to keep running during outages, a generator or inverter sized for the lift.
Approvals, registration and insurance
The Uttar Pradesh Lifts and Escalators Act, 2024 requires lifts to be registered and regularly maintained. The Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, passed by the Bihar Assembly in August 2024, covers registration, inspections, mandatory maintenance and third-party insurance. Confirm the current notified rules with your local authority, and budget for any fees and insurance premiums.
Annual maintenance (AMC)

How to Get an Accurate Lift Quote
An accurate quote comes from measuring your building, not from a phone call. Use this checklist before you compare suppliers.
- Book a site survey. The engineer should measure the shaft, pit, headroom and landing openings, and check the power supply.
- Fix the basics first. Number of stops, capacity, type of doors and whether you need a machine room.
- Ask for a line-item quote. Equipment, installation, structure (if any), civil work, electrical work, taxes and warranty should be listed separately.
- Check the safety list. ARD, light curtain, overload sensor with alarm, intercom, emergency light and emergency alarm should be named in writing.
- Ask about standards. IS 17900, harmonised with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50, became mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025 according to BIS. Ask the supplier how the lift complies.
- Compare AMC terms. Ask for the AMC price after warranty, response time and what parts are covered.
- Check local service. A lift needs quick support. Confirm where the nearest service team is based.
Where Buyers Can Save, and Where They Should Not
There are sensible ways to control the lift price:
- Choose a standard car size instead of a custom one.
- Pick stainless steel hairline finish instead of glass or mirror panels.
- Plan the shaft early, during construction, so no costly rework is needed later.
- Choose the right capacity. Oversizing adds cost; undersizing causes long waits.
Do not save money on safety devices, the controller, installation quality or maintenance. These decide whether the lift stays safe and reliable for many years.
Think in Total Cost, Not Just Purchase Price
A lift is used for many years, so the cheapest quote on day one is not always the cheapest lift. When you compare options, look at the full cost of ownership:
- Purchase and installation: equipment, structure, labour and taxes.
- Civil and electrical work: shaft, pit, headroom, openings and power supply.
- Electricity: a V3F drive reduces energy use compared with older, basic controls.
- Maintenance: AMC fees, plus parts if your contract does not cover them.
- Downtime: a lift that often breaks down costs you in time, tenant complaints or lost business.
- Future upgrades: the Bihar bill provides for replacement or major upgrade after about 20 years, so a well-built lift that can be modernised protects your investment.
A slightly higher price for a better controller, reliable safety devices and a nearby service team usually pays for itself over the life of the lift.
