Hospital Lift in Bhagalpur: Patient Lifts for Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Diagnostic Centres

Patient lifts for Bhagalpur hospitals and nursing homes, planned around the bed, the crowd of attendants, the generator and a building that cannot close.

Patients from many districts of eastern Bihar travel to Bhagalpur for treatment, and they rarely arrive alone. A hospital lift in Bhagalpur therefore has two jobs: to move a patient on a stretcher or bed without a jolt, and to stay available while attendants, visitors, food and linen all want the same car. Eldeal Engineers supplies, installs and maintains hospital elevators from its branch on the 5th Floor of Shree Ram Tower, Gosala Road.

This page is written for hospital administrators, nursing home owners and doctors planning a new block or diagnostic centre. It works through four decisions in the order you will face them: what rides in the lift, who else rides with it, what happens when the power fails, and how to install the lift without closing the hospital.

Begin with the largest thing that will ever ride

A stretcher lift and a bed lift are not the same product. A stretcher is narrow and light. A hospital bed is wide and heavy, and it travels with an attendant, an oxygen cylinder and often a drip stand.

TypeTypical capacity (indicative)What it carriesSuits
Stretcher lift8–13 persons (544–884 kg)One stretcher or wheelchair and the person with itNursing homes, clinics, diagnostic centres
Bed lift15–20 persons (1020–1360 kg)A ward bed and two staffHospitals with wards, OT or ICU above ground level
Large bed lift20–26 persons (1360–1768 kg)An ICU bed, its equipment and a teamLarger hospitals and critical-care blocks

Treat these industry ranges as a starting point. Your own beds and trolleys set the real dimensions. If patients will ever be moved between floors in their beds, plan for a bed lift from the start, because a shaft built for a stretcher lift cannot be widened later without major civil work. The options are listed on our hospital elevator page.

The last metre: threshold, doorway and turning space

Ask ward staff what they dislike about a lift and they will describe the few seconds at the door.

  • Doorway. Measure the bed with its rails raised and its attachments fitted. The opening has to clear that with space for hands, so that nobody needs to angle the bed.
  • Threshold. The car sill and the landing should line up whether the car is empty or carrying a bed and three people. Even a small lip is felt by a patient with a fracture and can snag a trolley castor. A V3F drive is what makes this accuracy possible.
  • Door timing. A transfer is slow. Set the doors to wait, and rely on the light curtain to stop them closing on a bed or a person.
  • Turning space. Beds do not turn on the spot. Check the area in front of the lift on every floor, not only at ground level, and keep waiting chairs out of it.

Keeping patients, visitors and service traffic apart

In a busy Bhagalpur hospital, each patient may have several family members in the building. If they all use the patient lift, it will not be free when a stretcher arrives. Where space and budget allow, plan three routes:

  1. Patient lift: bed or stretcher size, close to the emergency entrance, OT and ICU.
  2. Visitor and staff lift: an ordinary passenger lift near the main entrance and OPD.
  3. Service route: a dumbwaiter for food, medicines, files and samples, and a service lift or fixed hours for linen and waste.

A small nursing home may afford only one lift. In that case, ask for a priority key switch, which lets staff take control of the car for a transfer, and set clear rules for everything else. For the wider planning picture, read our post on hospital lift requirements.

When the supply fails mid-transfer

A hospital lift cannot wait for the mains to return. Plan the power supply in two layers:

  • Automatic rescue device (ARD): a battery unit for the first moments of a failure. It carries a car that was in motion to a landing and lets the patient and staff out.
  • Generator supply: what allows transfers to continue for the rest of the cut. Your electrical consultant must include the lift's starting load when sizing the generator, and the change-over should be automatic.

Voltage swings and the humid monsoon months near the river are hard on lift electronics. Good earthing, a dry and ventilated controller space and regular testing of the ARD battery matter more in a hospital than anywhere else. Every lift also has an overload sensor with voice prompt, an intercom, an emergency light and an alarm.

A hospital lift in Bhagalpur, installed around the patients

Many healthcare projects are extensions or upgrades of buildings that are already full of patients. That changes how the job is run:

  • Survey with the nursing and maintenance heads, not only the owner, so the patient route during the work is agreed.
  • Temporary partitions at every floor opening, so dust stays out of wards, OT and ICU.
  • Agreed hours for drilling and cutting, away from rounds and rest hours.
  • A temporary plan for moving patients if the only existing lift is being replaced. This needs to be decided before the old lift is switched off.
  • Testing before handover: levelling under load, ARD, overload sensor, door protection, intercom and alarm, demonstrated to your staff.

Each stage of the installation is inspected before the next begins. Because the branch is in the city, engineers can attend site meetings and return for snag correction without waiting for a team from another town.

Codes your architect and administrator should know

As per BIS, IS 17900 became mandatory for new lift installations from 22 December 2025. The points it emphasises are ARD, protection against unintended movement of the car and protection against overspeed when the car is ascending. The National Building Code 2016, Part 8 Section 5 covers building-side lift requirements, including fire lifts in taller buildings. Under the Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, a hospital's lifts face registration, inspection, compulsory maintenance and third-party insurance. Confirm the present requirements with the local authority and your architect.

Budget and after-care

A firm price needs a visit. What a hospital lift costs depends on car size and capacity, number of floors, door width and type, cabin finish, the shaft or structural work needed, and the power arrangement. The site survey is free, and the quote that follows is broken down item by item.

Once the lift is in use, put it on a maintenance contract from the first day. Our lift AMC plans combine planned visits with 24/7 breakdown support, and the technicians come from the Bhagalpur branch. Healthcare clients of Eldeal elsewhere include Singh Healthcare in Varanasi, RDMH Hospital in Mohania, and Samarpan Hospital and Narayan Medical College & Hospital in Sasaram.

Our nursing home in Bhagalpur has one lift for everything. How do we keep it free for patients?

Three low-cost steps help. Fit a priority key switch so staff can hold the lift for a patient transfer. Fix hours for linen, food and waste so they do not clash with rounds and visiting time. And send able-bodied attendants by the stairs with clear signs. A small dumbwaiter for food and samples takes many trips off the lift.

We are buying new ICU beds that are wider than our old ones. Does that affect the lift?

It can. A lift chosen around the old beds may not admit the new ones once the side rails and attachments are on. Give us the dimensions of the new bed before the car and door sizes are frozen. In an existing lift, we can measure and tell you whether the new beds will pass.

Our diagnostic centre is on an upper floor of a commercial building. Can the shared lift carry a stretcher?

Many shared lifts in commercial buildings cannot, because the car is too shallow or the doorway too narrow. We can measure the existing lift and say what it will take. If a stretcher does not fit, the choices are a wheelchair-based patient route or, where the building owner agrees and the structure allows, a separate lift.

The lift already has an ARD. Why do we need to put it on the generator as well?

They do different work. The ARD is there for the moment the supply fails: it gets a moving car to a landing so nobody is shut inside. After that the lift stands idle. Only generator supply lets you go on moving patients between floors until the mains return.

How do you keep dust and noise away from the wards during installation?

Each floor opening is closed off with a temporary partition, breaking and drilling are limited to hours fixed with the administrator, and material is carried by a route that does not pass through wards. This plan is settled with you before any work begins.

Should visitors be allowed in the patient lift?

If there is a second lift, no. Send visitors to it. A bed lift packed with relatives is of no use to the stretcher waiting outside. In a single-lift building, rely on the priority key and on visiting hours that are actually enforced.
